The shoulder is a complex joint that can be injured easily and if not treated promptly, the injury can become permanent. Shoulder injury related to vaccine administration, or SIRVA, happens when a vaccine is injected improperly into the deltoid muscle. This can lead to pain in the shoulder and restriction of arm movement.
In addition to a shoulder injury, SIRVA can cause other injuries, such as nerve damage and general shoulder tendonitis. The latter involves inflammation of the tendons that connect muscles to bones, which can lead to severe pain and stiffness in the shoulder area. Nerve damage can also cause tingling or numbness in the arm and hand, and is called ulnar neuropathy. In both cases, symptoms typically start in the shoulder and may radiate down the arm when rest or movement is attempted. Symptoms are usually present within 48 hours of vaccination and can range from dull to intense.
